Description

NinjaOne SaaS Backup is a cloud backup platform that helps businesses securely back up, manage, recover, and protect their business information. The automated and incremental cloud backups simplify the backup, recovery, and compliance experience. SaaS Backup works with Microsoft 365 (Hosted Exchange, Groups, and Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive), Gmail (including Calendars, Contacts, and Tasks), and other IMAP email servers.

With all the features and functionality incorporated into NinjaOne SaaS Backup, terminology may sometimes be confusing for the uninitiated. Review the alphabetized list below for terms associated with NinjaOne SaaS Backup that newer users may find helpful.

A

Amazon Web Services (AWS): A cloud computing platform that provides data storage and infrastructure capabilities to NinjaOne SaaS Backup.

Application (App): Specialized software designed for mobile devices, desktops, or servers to perform specific tasks. NinjaOne itself and NinjaOne SaaS Backup are both considered applications.

Application Programming Interface (API): A set of rules and protocols that allows different software applications to communicate, exchange data, and share functionality. NinjaOne uses APIs to create integrations and has a public API reference that programmers can use to create custom functionality.

Backup: Data that NinjaOne SaaS Backup copies and stores in the cloud, where it can be accessed and restored as needed.

Bandwidth: The amount of data that a device can transfer. Bandwidth is measured based on speed and time.

Bring Your Own Dropsuite (BYOD): Internal term used to describe the ability to add a Dropsuite account in NinjaOne so that you can manage it directly in the application without the need to manage separately in the Dropsuite console. The Dropsuite console is now called the NinjaOne SaaS Backup Partner Portal.

Cloud: Remote data storage accessed via the Internet. NinjaOne SaaS Backup uses Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud storage.

Console: An interface display. Also referred to as the user interface (UI) or graphical User Interface (GUI).

Dashboard: A dashboard is a graphical user interface that consolidates and displays critical data points in an easy-to-read format. NinjaOne uses multiple dashboards to consolidate related information. The dashboard you need will depend on the task you need to perform. There is a SaaS Backup dashboard in NinjaOne itself, and there is also a separate dashboard in the NinjaOne SaaS Backup Partner Portal. We always reference the name of the particular dashboard in our documentation to avoid confusion. It is essential to be aware of which dashboard you need to access when performing a task.

Dialog: A display window that appears in the console to prompt for user input, display information, or request decisions before proceeding with a task. Sometimes referred to as a "pop-up" or "modal."

Dojo: The NinjaOne knowledge base and help center website.

Dropsuite: The former name for the NinjaOne SaaS Backup product. Although technically incorrect, the NinjaOne SaaS Backup Partner Portal is sometimes still generically referred to as "Dropsuite."

Email Portal: See End-User Portal.

End-User Portal: The portal that end-user customers can access to manage backups for their organization. Access and functionality are controlled based on user roles. Some documentation may also refer to this portal as the email portal, although you can access other types of backups there as well.

Entra: Microsoft Entra is a family of cloud-based identity and network access products. It includes Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory), which handles user authentication, single sign-on (SSO), and multi-factor authentication (MFA) for applications.

Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory): The identity and access component of Microsoft Entra.

Entra Portal: A portal that partners and end-users use to access their organizations' Microsoft Entra backups. You can access the Entra portal directly from within NinjaOne.

GMail: A web-based email service provided by Google that allows users to send, receive, and manage emails.

Google Groups: A service from Google that provides discussion groups for people sharing common interests. 

Google Workspace (GWS): A cloud-based productivity and collaboration suite developed by Google, designed for businesses, teams, and organizations.

Graphical User Interface (GUI):  A display interface that allows people to interact with electronic devices—such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. Also referred to as the user interface (UI) or console.

Help Center: A generic term that usually refers to either the NinjaOne Dojo or the NinjaOne SaaS Backup Help Center.

Hosted Exchange: Microsoft Hosted Exchange is a cloud-based, managed version of Microsoft Exchange email.

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP): A standard email protocol that allows users to access and synchronize email messages across multiple devices by storing them on a central, remote server rather than downloading them locally.

Integration: An integration uses APIs to connect different applications and systems to create seamless processes and workflows and a single, unified system. The NinjaOne SaaS Backup integration in NinjaOne allows NinjaOne to incorporate NinjaOne SaaS Backup (formerly Dropsuite) components into its core functionality and interface.

Microsoft 365 (M365): A cloud-based subscription service combining multiple productivity applications and cloud services, including Hosted Exchange, OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, and others.

NinjaOne: Our cloud-native, unified IT management platform used to monitor, manage, and secure all endpoints.

NinjaOne Backup: An umbrella term for NinjaOne's backup-related product offerings, consisting of NinjaOne Device Backup and NinjaOne SaaS Backup.

NinjaOne Device Backup: NinjaOne's application for direct backup of endpoint machines.

NinjaOne SaaS Backup: Formerly known as Dropsuite, NinjaOne SaaS Backup is an application that automates cloud backups, simplifying the backup, recovery, and compliance experience.

NinjaOne SaaS Backup End-User Portal: A website where users with proper permissions can directly access their organization's backups for download or restoration. Partners can access the End-User portal directly from NinjaOne.

NinjaOne SaaS Backup Entra Portal: A website where users with proper permissions can directly access their organization's Microsoft Entra ID backups for download or restoration. Partners can access the Entra portal directly from NinjaOne.

NinjaOne SaaS Backup Partner Portal: A website formerly known as the Dropsuite console, where partners can manage their SaaS Backup organizations, tenants, and backups. You can now access and perform many of the SaaS Backup Partner Portal's functions directly in NinjaOne without the need to log into a separate portal.

OneDrive: A Microsoft cloud-based storage service that allows users to store, sync, and share files, photos, and documents across various devices, including computers, tablets, and phones. 

Organization: A company, client, or collection of end-users that share common attributes. You use Organizations in both NinjaOne and NinjaOne SaaS Backup as a way to categorize customers and data into logical, easy-to-manage groups.

Page: a generic term used to describe a screen or dialog in a user interface.

Partner: A NinjaOne customer who provides services to third-party organizations and end-users.

Partner Portal: See the NinjaOne SaaS Backup Partner Portal definition above.

Plan: The group of NinjaOne Backup services you purchase, such as Backup or Backup +Archiver.

Portal: A secure, specialized website used to manage an application. NinjaOne SaaS Backup utilizes multiple portals to manage different aspects of the application. You can access each portal directly from the NinjaOne console, or in some cases, users may access individual portals to manage various aspects of the service. The most commonly accessed portals are the NinjaOne application itself, the NinjaOne SaaS Backup Partner Portal (formerly called Dropsuite), which you can use to manage organizations, and the NinjaOne SaaS Backup End-User Portal, where end-user customers can manage their backups directly based on permissions set by their service provider.

Q

QuickBooks Online (QBO): A cloud-based accounting software made by Intuit. Small-to-medium-sized businesses use QBO to manage finances from any device with an internet connection. Some versions of SaaS Backup, purchased through particular resellers, may have QBO backup capability.

Report: Reports in NinjaOne SaaS Backup provide in-depth details on various aspects of your backups and status. Depending on the type of report, it may be run ad hoc, scheduled to run at a specific frequency, or both.

Reseller: A third-party seller of NinjaOne SaaS Backup.

Retention: How long NinjaOne SaaS Backup keeps your backup data, and when the system securely removes it.

SaaS Backup: An abbreviated term for NinjaOne SaaS Backup.

SaaS dashboard: The NinjaOne SaaS Backup dashboards enable you to view and manage various aspects of your SaaS backups from a central location. See Dashboard for more information.

Seat: Seats represent the individual users you have licensed in NinjaOne SaaS Backup. 

SharePoint: Microsoft SharePoint is a cloud-based collaboration and document management application, often used to create and manage internal company intranet sites.

Single Pane of Glass: A dashboard or platform that provides centralized visibility into various sources of information and data. We design dashboards in NinjaOne to serve this function.

Single Sign On (SSO): An authentication method that allows users to securely access multiple, independent applications with a single set of credentials.

Software as a Service (SaaS): A method of software delivery and licensing in which software is accessed online via a subscription, rather than bought and installed on individual computers.

Teams: A Microsoft cloud-based collaboration application within the Microsoft 365 (M365) suite, Teams allows organizations to collaborate, share files, and hold meetings in real-time.

Tenant: A tenant is an isolated instance of a Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace account dedicated to a single customer, organization, or user group. It acts as a secure container for data, users, and configurations, ensuring that one customer's data remains separated from others in multi-tenant environments.

Throttle: The ability to adjust the speed of data transfer. Useful to preserve bandwidth when resources may be limited.

User: A generic term for someone who has access to NinjaOne SaaS Backup or one of its components. Users are assigned various roles and permission levels based on their use case. The term "user" often refers to end-user customers.

User Interface (UI): See Graphical User Interface (GUI)

Virtual Machine (VM): A software-based emulation of a physical computer that runs an operating system and applications, functioning as a separate, isolated computer on a host machine.

Windows: Generic term for the Microsoft Windows operating system (OS).
