Add or Change Device Owner

Topic

This article explains how to set or change the assigned user of a device in NinjaOne.

Environment

NinjaOne Endpoint Management

Description

Endpoint devices, such as laptops or workstations, may sometimes be issued or transferred to new users due to employee turnover, reallocation of assets, or various other business-related scenarios. NinjaOne allows you to keep track of this information. You can assign a user to a device or change the assignment by entering the information in the Assigned user field in NinjaOne. Once assigned, you can adjust or remove the information as needed. to keep a current record of device assignment or ownership.

The Assigned user field is for NinjaOne reference purposes. The feature does not change or update any information stored on the endpoint itself.

Why the Assigned User Field Matters

The Assigned user field does more than label a device. It connects a device to a specific person in ways that improve searchability, automation, and data organization across NinjaOne. Refer to the following sections for more information about how NinjaOne uses the Assigned user field.

Search by Assigned User

After you have assigned a user to a device, you can find that device by searching for the user's name in the NinjaOne global search bar. The global search makes it faster to locate a device when you know who uses it, without needing to know the device name or ID.

Microsoft Intune Integration: Automatic Assignment

If your organization uses the Microsoft Intune integration, NinjaOne will attempt to populate the assigned user field during sync automatically. When Intune imports a device, NinjaOne looks up the associated user's email address and, if a matching technician, end user, or contact already exists in NinjaOne, NinjaOne will assign them to the device automatically.

To learn more about assigning users to Microsoft Intune devices, refer to:

Set the Assigned User from the Device Dashboard

You can also set or change a device's assigned user from the device dashboard. To do so, click Edit Assigned user and then select a user from the dialog.

Setting the Assigned User from the Command Line Interface (CLI)

If you are comfortable working in the command line interface (CLI), you can also set the assigned user field using the NinjaOne CLI, which is useful for automated provisioning workflows or scripted device configuration at scale.

As with the Intune integration, the email address provided in the CLI command must already exist in NinjaOne as a technician, end user, or contact. If NinjaOne does not find a matching record, it will not apply the assignment.

For more information about adding users with the command line interface, refer to: NinjaOne ITAM: Create an Unmanaged Device via Command Line Interface (CLI)
