Fixing Backup Error 10054: Connection Reset by Host Machine

Issue

Backups for a protected endpoint complete with a warning that states, "Connection reset by host machine."

Environment

NinjaOne Backup

Cause

Microsoft Windows aborted an established connection because part of the TCP/IP handshake was missing or altered.

Resolution

You can troubleshoot this issue by performing the following steps:

  1. Configure the NinjaOne Backup Plan to prevent the device from sleeping or modify the device’s sleep settings. For more information, refer to NinjaOne Backup: Image Backup Plans (Legacy).
  2. Ensure the protected endpoint has enough power to prevent it from shutting down.
  3. Try not to reboot the machine while a backup is running.
  4. Ensure that your environment's networking configuration meets the requirements defined in our Global Allowlist (Whitelist) Information article. Review the firewall and antivirus software configurations on the protected endpoint in case they are causing packet loss.
