NinjaOne Backup: Error 306: Snapshot deleted while uploading

Issue

Backups for a protected endpoint complete with a warning that states, "Snapshot deleted while uploading."

Environment

NinjaOne Backup

Cause

During backup operations, Microsoft Windows deleted the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot used by NinjaOne Backup. This issue can occur when a protected volume on the endpoint has low disk space or when limits on the endpoint's VSS Shadow Storage have been reached. In rare instances, other programs attempting to interact with VSS at the same time as NinjaOne Backup can also cause this error.

Resolution

Perform the following steps to troubleshoot this error:

  1. Ensure that each protected volume on the endpoint has at least 20% free disk space.
Microsoft recommends maintaining a minimum of 10% free disk space per volume for general VSS usage. However, NinjaOne Backup may require up to 20% free disk space.
  1. Verify that no other applications on the endpoint are performing VSS-dependent operations on the same schedule as NinjaOne Backup.
  2. Use VSSADMIN to review the endpoint's Shadow Storage configuration. Verify that no restrictions, such as disk quotas, prevent a successful backup. To learn more about this process, refer to vssadmin | Microsoft Learn (external link).
