With organizations adopting work-from-home setups, MSPs need to learn how to leverage automation to streamline remote work workflows. This seven-step guide shows how you can create remote workflow automations for your managed environment. Step one: pick high-impact WFH automations. First, select which work-from-home automations will work best for your systems. Consider factors such as patch management, VPN and Wi-Fi repair, disk cleanup, browser reset, credential refresh, and software installation. Step two: build guardrails and rollout rings. Next, create guardrails that can protect remote endpoints and reduce the impact if an automation fails. Define how you will perform the pilot run, run pre-checks for disk, CPU, battery, and connectivity, enable automatic rollback for failed post-checks, and stagger releases by time zone and business hours. Step three: document runbooks for each automation. Then, document runbooks for each automated procedure. Record the owner, trigger or schedule, inputs, variables, expected results, and rollback steps, and store relevant logs and screenshots with the launch ticket. Step four: create failure detection and feedback loops. Afterward, set up failure detection and feedback loops for your automation processes. Standardize exit codes and log formats. Scan for error or warn events, and automatically create tickets with device context when failures occur. Step five: secure the automation chain. Follow this by securing your automation chain. Use least-privilege service principles, signed scripts, scoped tokens, and secure secrets in a vault. Require approvals for risky changes such as driver updates or registry edits. Step six: measure outcomes and publish proof. Once your automations are running, document performance data and have it ready for QBRs to show clients and stakeholders the results of your remote work setup. Track success rate, rerun rate, time saved, and device coverage, and publish a monthly scorecard highlighting top wins and lessons learned. Step seven: support remote employee experience. And finally, continue to provide support to employees so they can adapt to automated workflows more easily. With automation, remote work environments can work just as efficiently as their on-site and hybrid counterparts.
