How to Enable Steps Recorder in Windows Steps Recorder is a helpful tool for recording and documenting instructions for a Windows procedure. Here's how to enable it on your device. Before we begin, be sure to subscribe to NinjaOne's IT Video Hub and our YouTube channel for more tech content like this. Enabling Steps Recorder Firstly, you need to know how to access this tool and check its status in your system. Go to the Start Menu and search for Steps Recorder, or press Windows key + R, type psr.exe, and press Enter. If you have discovered it is disabled, here are two ways to enable the Steps Recorder. One is to use the Group Policy Editor or Local Group Policy Editor. Open it by pressing Windows key + R, typing gpedit.msc, and pressing Enter. Then, head to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Steps Recorder. Double-click “Do not allow Steps Recorder to run,” and select Disabled or Not Configured to enable it. Save the changes by clicking Apply and OK. Restart your PC, and that's it! Another method you can try is via the Registry Editor. Again, press Windows key + R. This time, type regedit and press Enter. Navigate to AppCompact with this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\ Microsoft\Windows\AppCompat Or, right-click on Windows, select New > Key, and name it AppCompat. Then, make a new DWORD (32-bit) Value named DisableUAR. Set the value to 1 to disable or 0 to enable. Save the changes by closing the Registry Editor and restarting. Troubleshooting Issues You may have encountered some issues while using Steps Recorder. If the tool isn’t opening, it has either been disabled or corrupted by a system file. Check its status via the Group Policy or Registry Editor. Otherwise, run SFC /scannow in Command Prompt to scan for a potentially corrupt system file. If you cannot save your recordings, it may be an issue with the file’s destination. Inspect your folder permissions to see where your system saves the recordings, or save them directly to your desktop. If Steps Recorder keeps crashing or not responding, try restarting your PC or checking for Windows updates for the latest patches and drivers. And there you have it! Now you can record and share your Windows procedures hassle-free!
