Why Disable the Touchpad When Using a Mouse? Usually, having both turned on isn't what most users would expect. Occasionally, though, it comes with a few inconveniences, from accidental clicking to conflicting commands to device compatibility. Whichever the case, it's wise to turn off your touchpad, and here are three ways to do just that. Three Ways to Disable Touchpad Option 1: Via Settings The first method is the most straightforward. Go to Settings and head to the Devices tab (or Bluetooth and devices if you’re using Windows 11). There, you’ll see the “Touchpad” toggle switch. Click it to turn it off, and that’s it! Option 2: Via Control Panel The second option is for laptop units with Synaptics, ELAN, or Precision Touchpads. Go to Control Panel, select Mouse, and head to the Clickpad tab. From there, just click “Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached.” Option 3: Via Device Manager For our third and final method, go to the Start Menu and click on Device Manager. Click on Mice and other pointing devices to expand. Find the Touchpad device, open its properties, go to Driver, and select Disable Device. And there you have it.
