Adding or Removing the Power Button from the Start Menu Users can choose between three methods to add or remove the power button from the start menu. Select the method that best suits your environment. Using the Group Policy Editor The Group Policy Editor is the most reliable method of removing or restoring the Start Menu Power button in Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. Start by opening the Group Policy Editor. To do this, press Win + R, type [gpedit.msc] and press enter. Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. Find and double-click Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands on the right-hand pane. In the pop-up dialog box, select Enabled to remove the Power button or Disabled/Not Configured to add it. Click OK, then reboot your device or run gpupdate /force to apply changes. Using Registry Editor Users with no access to Group Policy can modify the Registry instead. This method will only affect the Start menu, so users can still access shutdown options from the Quick Link menu, Alt+F4 dialog, or Ctrl+Alt+Del screen. To open the Registry Editor, press Win + R, type [regedit], and hit Enter. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mi crosoft\PolicyManager\default\Start \HidePowerButton In the right pane, double-click the value DWORD. Set the data to 1 to hide the Power button, or 0 to show it. Click OK, then restart your device or sign out to apply changes. Using PowerShell Finally, users can also use PowerShell to automate the registry modification. This is ideal for IT administrators managing large device fleets or scripted deployments. First, open PowerShell as an Administrator. Then, run the appropriate command.
