What is SAML and how does it work? Managing secure access across multiple digital services is more important than ever, and that's where SAML comes in. In this video, we'll explain what SAML is, how it works, and why it's a cornerstone of modern identity and access management systems. Before we begin, be sure to subscribe to Ninja One's IT Video Hub for more tech content like this. What is SAML Security Assertion Markup language or SAML is an XML based standard used to exchange authentication and authorization data between two parties, an identity provider, and a service provider. It also enables single sign on SSO allowing users to log in once and access multiple applications securely. Instead of managing separate passwords across systems. SAML simplifies and secures the process, reducing attack surfaces, and boosting productivity because of its flexibility and security. It's used in many industries, including healthcare, education, finance, government, retail, and tech. How SAML works. The SAML process kicks off when a user tries to access an application. The service provider sends an authentication request to the identity provider, which verifies the user's credentials and responds with A-S-A-M-L assertion. This assertion contains the user's identity and access details. The service provider uses it to grant access without requiring the user to log in. Again, key components include SAML request sent by the service provider to request authentication. SAML response sent by the identity provider with the authentication result. SAML Token, a secure token that contains identity and access info. SAML login. A user is authenticated and granted access to the service provider to together. These steps enable secure password free authentication across trusted systems. Benefits of using SAML. Using SAML delivers enhanced security and usability as seen with these benefits. Simplified User access one login for many apps, reduce password fatigue, fewer credentials to manage lower IT overhead, less support for password resets, improved compliance, centralized user control, and auditability. It's especially useful in environments with complex infrastructure or multiple cloud services, where consistent secure authentication is a must. SAML Best practices, while powerful SAML must be implemented with care best practices include ensuring certificates are current and securely stored. Maintaining compatibility across platforms regularly, reviewing security settings continuously monitoring for evolving threats. Balancing usability with strong security is key. Regular audits, timely updates and strict adherence to SAML specifications help maintain performance and protection.
