Caret browsing is an accessibility feature that lets you navigate web pages with your keyboard. The “caret” refers to the blinking text cursor you see when you type. With caret browsing, you can move that cursor around a web page using the arrow keys and other keyboard shortcuts— no mouse required. It's especially useful if you prefer keyboard navigation, have limited mobility, or want to reduce risk strain. How to Enable or Disable Caret Browsing in Microsoft Edge There are different ways to enable or disable caret browsing in Microsoft Edge, and the fastest method is with a keyboard shortcut. Method 1 — Keyboard Shortcut Turning carrot browsing on is as simple as pressing the F7 key. When prompted with “Turn on caret browsing?”, click Yes. To disable the feature, press F7 again. Keep in mind that this method only lasts for your current session. If you restart Edge, you’ll need to enable it again. Method 2 — Edge Settings For a more permanent option across sessions, you can change the setting in Edge’s menu. First, open Microsoft Edge and type this in the address bar. Then scroll down to Navigate pages with a text cursor and toggle it on or off to enable or disable. Alternatively, you can access it via the Settings menu. Click the three dots in the upper-right corner. Select Settings and choose Accessibility from the left panel. Then look for the Keyboard section on the right, and turn “Navigate pages with a text cursor” on or off based on your preference. Method 3 — Group Policy This option is ideal for organizations that want to standardize user settings. Start by opening Group Policy Editor. In the Start/Search Box, type gpedit.msc. Navigate to Configuration, Administrative Templates, Microsoft Edge, Accessibility. Lastly, double-click Enable caret browsing to open the settings. Choose your preferred option. Enabled - Always allow caret browsing Disabled - Block caret browsing Not configured - Lets users toggle caret browsing manually via Edge settings. Click Apply, then OK, and restart Edge. In the end, caret browsing makes Microsoft Edge more accessible and versatile for everyone. Whether you want quick navigation without a mouse or need it for accessibility reasons, it’s just a few clicks—or an F7 key—away.
