Why Vertical Tabs Matter Most of us are used to seeing our tabs lined up horizontally across the top of the browser, but vertical tabs move those tabs to a panel along the left edge of the window. Instead of cramming dozens of tabs into a shrinking bar, Edge stacks them neatly in a vertical list, which improves visibility and navigation. This layout helps with multitasking and visibility, especially on large monitors or wide displays. Vertical tabs can also help IT admins standardize the user interface across managed environments. On the other hand, power users might prefer toggling them for personal workflows or accessibility reasons. How To Turn Vertical Tabs On or Off To turn vertical tabs on or off, the easiest method is directly in Edge. Right-click any tab or select the Tab Actions menu in the top-left corner. Then choose Turn on vertical tabs to switch layouts. The tab bar moves to the left, and your old horizontal tabs disappear. To go back, repeat the step and select Turn off vertical tabs—Edge will remember your last layout automatically. Managing Vertical Tabs in Enterprise Environments If you’re managing multiple systems, you can enforce or hide vertical tabs through Group Policy, provided the Microsoft Edge ADMX templates are installed. Navigate to: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Tabs. From there, configure the “Vertical Tabs” policy to enable, disable, or leave it user-configurable.
