What is RD Gateway? RD Gateway is a Windows Server role that lets users access internal resources over the internet through an encrypted HTTPS connection. It acts as a secure bridge, authenticating users and protecting internal systems. Why use RD Gateway? Secure access: Uses HTTPS and centralized authentication. Access control: Admins can manage permissions and monitor usage. Remote-friendly: Works with RDP clients across devices. Simplified setup: Fewer complex network configurations Before installing RD Gateway, make sure your system is ready. Use Windows Server 2019/2022. Configure DNS. Open TCP port 443. Set up Active Directory. Obtain an SSL certificate. Open Server Manager, “Add roles and features,” Select Remote Desktop Gateway. Complete the prompts to install. SSL Certificate: Import the certificate into the local computer store. Assign it an RD Gateway Manager under SSL settings. Configure Settings: Assign IP, subnet, and gateway. Create a CAP (Connection Authorization Policy) Set RAP (Resource Authorization Policy) for resource access. Verify DNS and set access conditions like IP ranges or time windows. Once RD Gateway is installed, proper configuration ensures secure and efficient remote access. Use RD Gateway Manager to define who connects how and when. Assign access rights via Server Manager. Customize settings like timeouts, redirection and logging. Troubleshooting If you encounter problems with RD Gateway, check the Event Viewer for service errors. One common issue? Expired SSL certificates. Monitor them and renew early to avoid disruptions. For more information, check out our official blog post on Remote Desktop Gateway, linked in the description below.
