What is a Shadow Copy? A shadow copy is a point-in-time snapshot of your file. If you need to revert to an earlier version, this copy allows you to do so quickly without losing your current work. Setting up Windows Shadow Copy To enable Windows Shadow Copy, right-click “This PC” in File Explorer, select “Properties,” and click “System protection.” Choose the drive where Windows is installed and click “Configure.” Select “Turn on system protection” and adjust the “Max Usage” slider. This determines the maximum disk space allocated for storing shadow copies. Finally, click “Apply” and then “OK.” Restoring Data from a Windows Shadow Copy To restore a previous version of a file or folder, right-click the specific item in “File Explorer” and select “Properties.” Then click the tab labeled “Previous Versions.” Here, you’ll see a list of available shadow copies for this particular file or folder. Select one and click “Open” to preview its contents. Once you've identified your desired version, you have two options. Click “Restore” to replace the current version of the file or folder with the selected version. Be careful with this option as it will overwrite your current data. Alternatively, click “Copy” to save the selected version to a different location on your system, preserving both the current and past versions. Overall, Window Shadow Copy is a valuable and readily available tool for recovering previous file versions and minimizing downtime. Just remember that while shadow copies provide a convenient short-term recovery solution, they should complement, not replace, a comprehensive backup plan.
