Understanding IP addresses An IP address is a unique number that helps identify your device on a network, like your computer's home address. IP addresses can be public or private. Any device connected to a network has an IP address, and if it's online, it also has a public IP, either its own or shared through a router. What is a private IP address? A private IP address is used for communication between devices on the same local network, like your laptop and printer at home or in an office, your router or a company server usually gives out these addresses. What is a public IP address? Public IP addresses are used to connect to the internet and are assigned by your internet provider. Usually, your router gets the public IP and shares the connection with your devices by using their private IPs so they aren't directly exposed online. How to find your private IP address on Windows 10 and Windows 11 On Windows 10 or 11, there are a few easy ways to find your local IP address. Using Command Prompt: Open Command Prompt. Type ipconfig and press Enter. Look for your active network connection. Your local IP, which is usually labeled IPv4 Address, will be shown there. Using PowerShell: Open PowerShell. Enter the command seen on screen. This shows only your IPv4 local IP addresses, excluding virtual adapters. Using Windows Settings: Right-click the Start button and select Settings. Go to Network & Internet. Click Properties under your active connection. Your IPv4 address will be listed along with other network details. How to find your public IP address.
