Prerequisites to Keep in Mind There are a few different ways to display a short date on your Windows 11 taskbar. Before you start, make sure you're running Windows 11 Pro, Education, or Enterprise. Preferably, version 23H2 or later, since the Settings toggle is only available on newer builds. Also, make sure that you have administrator rights if you plan to use the Registry Editor or PowerShell methods. Method 1: Enable or Disable via the Settings App The quickest and simplest way to change how your date and time appear is right in your Windows settings. Press Windows + I to open Settings. Go to Personalization, then Taskbar, and expand Taskbar behaviors. Turn on Show shortened time and date to use the abbreviated format or turn it off to show the full version. If you don't see this option, you might be on an older Windows 11 build or your admin settings could be blocking it. Method 2: Enable or Disable via Registry Editor Adjust a few registry settings to apply persistent, per-user changes and make them stick. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter. Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced In the right panel, double-click ShowShortenedDateTimeFormat. If it’s missing, right-click the empty space, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it ShowShortenedDateTimeFormat. Set its value to: 1 for the shortened date and time 0 for the full format Close the Registry Editor, then restart Explorer.exe or sign out and back in to apply the change. Method 3: PowerShell Script for Automation Run advanced scripts to manage user access and system settings. Press Windows + R, type PowerShell, and hit Enter.
