How to Disable Wallpaper (JPEG) Quality Reduction in Windows 11 If your desktop wallpaper looks a bit blurry or faded, Windows 11 may be compressing it to save disk space and improve performance. While this helps most users, it can reduce clarity on high-resolution displays like 4K monitors. How to Disable Windows 11 Wallpaper Compression Users can choose between using Registry Editor, PowerShell or a .reg file to disable wallpaper compression. Using Registry Editor Using Registry Editor is ideal for individual computers or non-domain systems. First, open the Registry Editor and navigate to Editor and navigate to H key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop Modify or create the JPEG quality value using the key JPEGImportQuality. To create the value, right-click in the right pane and choose New > DWORD (32-bit). Make sure to name it “JPEGImportQuality”. To modify the value, double-click it and set the value to 100. Select Decimal under Base. This sets the JPEG quality to maximum, preventing Windows from compressing the wallpaper. Close Registry Editor and restart File Explorer, or log out and back in to apply your changes. Using PowerShell The PowerShell method is ideal for IT administrators managing multiple user profiles or devices. To use this method, open PowerShell and enter the command on the screen. The Stop-Process command should restart File Explorer, allowing you to see the change immediately. Using a .reg file A .reg file is useful in shared and managed environments where users cannot access PowerShell or Registry Editor. To use this method, open Notepad to create the .reg file. Then, copy the code on the screen: Next, go to File > Save as and set the Save as type to All Files. Name the file Disable_JPEG_Compression.reg and save it to your desktop. Once saved, click on the file to run it and confirm the prompt to add it to the registry. Once done, restart File Explorer to apply your changes.
