Why Change Default Location of Videos Folder By default, your Videos Folder is located on your system's boot drive, also known as your C: Drive. The problem with having videos stored on your primary storage drive is that they can take up a large amount of space, especially if these files have high resolutions and long runtimes. A few suggested solutions include keeping back up copies on a separate device, as we will discuss in this video guide, moving your Videos Folder to a separate location. Four Methods to Change Default Location of Videos Folder Method 1 - File Explorer Let's begin with the two most preferred methods for individual users. For our first method, open File Explorer, and create a new folder in your desired location. In this example, we created a new Videos Folder in our D: Drive. Then, right-click the Videos Folder, and select Properties. Head to the Location tab, click "Move…" and navigate to the target path of the newly created folder. Press Select Folder, click Apply, then OK. Click Yes, if prompted, to move all your video files to the new location. Method 2 - Registry Editor For our second method, open Registry Editor, and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders. Under User Shell Folders, find and double-click the string value named "My Video". Type in your desired path to the Value data field, and click OK. Restart File Explorer to apply the changes, then transfer your video files to the new location. Methods 3 & 4 - Command Prompt and PowerShell Next, we will show your two methods for IT admin users managing multiple devices. Both use scripts to automate configurations, eliminating the need to make changes manually. For Command Prompt users, enter this command to change the folder location. Change "PATH" with your target path. To restore it to default, use the command: And, for PowerShell users, enter this script, and, as with Command Prompt, change "PATH" to your desired new location.
