How to Automate Endpoint Naming Conventions and Join Processes in Windows Autopilot Consistent device naming and automated join processes are essential for visibility, security, and policy targeting at scale. With Windows Autopilot, IT teams can enforce standardized endpoint naming conventions and streamline. Azure AD Join or Hybrid Azure AD Join during enrollment. In this video, we'll walk through practical ways to automate both. Before we begin, be sure to subscribe to NinjaOne’s IT video hub and our YouTube channel for more tech content like this. Automating Endpoint Naming Conventions There are several ways you can automate naming and managed environments. We'll discuss some of these methods in this section. Method 1: Using Autopilot Deployment Profiles The most common approach to enforcing naming conventions is using an Autopilot deployment profile. First, sign in to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager Admin Center. Then, go to Devices. From there, navigate to Windows, then Windows enrollment, and then Deployment Profiles. Select a new Autopilot profile, then press Next. Choose between Azure AD joined or Hybrid Azure AD, then enable Apply device name template. At this point, you can assign a naming pattern. Finally, assign the profile to your Autopilot-registered devices. Your chosen endpoint convention should be automatically applied when provisioning begins. Method 2: Using PowerShell For scenarios outside standard Autopilot workflows, PowerShell provides a flexible method that can be used during pre-provisioning or technician setup. Simply open PowerShell as an administrator and run the script onscreen Method 3: Using GPOs Group policy allows administrators to standardize endpoint names across devices when Autopilot isn’t available. Start by opening the Local Group Policy Editor, then go to Computer Configuration, then select Administrative Templates, System, then NetBIOS Name. From there, you can set the Computer Name Policy to a defined prefix or pattern. Other Methods Aside from the three discussed methods, you can also use the Intune Connector for Active Directory to automatically domain-join Windows Autopilot devices to an Active Directory and register them in Azure AD as Hybrid Azure AD joined. You can read more about this specific method in our official blog. Automating endpoint naming conventions and join processes reduces errors, saves time, and improves device management at scale.
