Five-Step Guide to Building a Better IT Roadmap Even after completion, IT projects from the past year can provide valuable insights in planning new and improved roadmaps for your MSP. By gaining insight into their successes and failures, you and your team can make more informed decisions when planning future initiatives Step 1: Review last year’s projects Start by gathering data and other information from past projects. Examine aspects such as timelines, planned versus actual budgets, client and end-user satisfaction, and so on. Also compare planned timelines and budgets against actual outcomes to identify gaps between expectations and results. Step 2: Identify common failure or success patterns, Then analyze them to identify common causes of success and failure. Ask questions such as: What were the typical causes of delay? Which tools aided in or hindered project success? Step 3: Map outcomes to business objectives Afterwards, see how each project contributed to achieving your business’s long-term goals. Do they have a positive effect on your organization’s efficiency and revenue? Do they assist in maintaining compliance and improving security measures? Step 4: Forecast capacity and budget needs Once you get a clearer picture of your projects from the previous year, use these insights to forecast your MSP’s needs. Do you need to add resources or develop new skill sets to meet deadlines faster? Is your team’s current set of tools sufficient in meeting its needs? What budget and resource levels are realistically required based on historical performance? If your team has adopted too many tools, consider adjusting licensing and vendor management strategies. Step 5: Build your data-driven roadmap Use these insights to prioritize initiatives based on historical value, available resources, budget constraints, and business-critical needs. Then build your roadmap for the coming year. By collecting and analyzing data from past projects, you can build an IT roadmap that is founded on informed decisions, rather than vague guesswork.
