This article provides instructions for disabling NinjaOne Backup at various levels.
Environment
NinjaOne Device Backup
Description
For information about deleting backup data without disabling the application, refer to Additional Resources.
There are several ways to remove a backup plan in NinjaOne:
- Important Considerations
- Disable Backup at the Policy Level
- Remove Backup at the System Level
- Remove Backup for a Deleted, Rejected, or Disabled Device
- Turn off Backup Deployment
- Additional Resources
Important Considerations
Before uninstalling NinjaOne Backup, consider the following data:
- Removing backup at the system level does not permanently delete all backup data from the cloud. Contact NinjaOne Support to discuss options for deleting backup data from the platform. You can also refer to the Additional Resources section for further exploration of options.
- Removing backup at the system level affects all devices, organizations, and policies.
- Removing backup at the policy level affects deployment at the organization level. Backups will no longer run as previously scheduled on all devices affected by the policy.
- The difference between turning off NinjaOne Backup and excluding a device from using NinjaOne Backup at the policy levels works as follows:
- The Disable button provides the option to remove backup from the device for an unspecified amount of time, whether temporary or otherwise. If you choose to deploy backup in bulk, it will be deployed to any device that was previously inactive.
- Exclusion provides the option of deploying NinjaOne backup in bulk without affecting the excluded device. If you were to deploy in bulk without excluding a device, you would then need to go back and turn off backup on specific devices manually.
To ensure that the backup data gets properly deleted for the device from which you are uninstalling NinjaOne Backup, follow these steps:
- Delete the backup plan for the device, either at the policy level or as a device-level policy override. To learn how to perform device-level overrides, refer to NinjaOne Policies: Change or Override a Device Policy in NinjaOne.
- Delete the backup data for the device. For more information about how to do so, refer to the following articles depending on the backup plan type:
Disable Backup at the Policy Level
- Open the policy configuration page (Administration → Policies).
- Open Backup → Image and click Disable.

To exclude specific volumes from backup, use the following processes depending on the data type:
Image Volume Exclusions
To exclude image volumes, perform the following steps:
- Open the policy configuration page (Administration → Policies).
- Open Backup → Image.
- In the Exclusion section, enter the volume letter or name. You can exclude specific volumes and removable disks as needed. There are two types of exclusions you can make:
- Volume Letter: Type the letter and press Enter on your keyboard.
- Volume Name: Enter the full name of the volume you are excluding. Excluding specific volumes can be helpful if you want to standardize your volume names and exclude any drive named "Cache" or "SQL_LOG," as an example.

Remove Backup for a Deleted, Rejected, or Disabled Device
When you remove a device from a backup plan or delete it from the NinjaOne console, the previously backed-up data remains in the system. To remove backup data for a deleted device, perform the following steps:
- Navigate to the organization backup dashboard and open the Overview section. For more information about this section of the dashboard, refer to Dashboards: NinjaOne Backup.
- Select the checkbox next to one or more devices and click Delete legacy data at the top of the screen.

You will be prompted to enter your email address to confirm this action, as it cannot be undone. It may take up to a few hours to permanently purge all data for the device.
Turn off Backup Deployment
If you do not want to disable NinjaOne Backup but instead want to prevent backup from being deployed to one or more devices, you can use the processes outlined in this section.
- Turn off Deployment for All Devices in an Organization
- Disable Deployment for a Single Device in an Organization
Turn off Deployment for All Devices in an Organization
To turn off deployment for all devices in an organization, perform the following steps:
- Navigate to the organization configuration settings page (Administration → Organizations), expand the Backup option in the left navigation pane and select Deployment.
- From here, you have two options: Either click Disable in the top right corner or select one or more of the Deploy to boxes.
- The Disable button includes third-party backup apps that may be enabled at the system level.
- Keeping the backup engine enabled while deployment is turned off allows you to view past backup data and manage existing devices without deploying backup to new devices. You can also use this functionality to configure your bandwidth or network settings prior to deploying the agent.
