NinjaOne Backup: Deleting Image Backup Data

Topic

This guide describes the methods for deleting data from a NinjaOne Image Backup plan.

Environment

NinjaOne Backup

Description

Deletion in NinjaOne is a multi-step process with several options depending on the specific data you wish to remove. Review the sections below for additional information.

Before You Delete

  • You cannot recover deleted backup data. NinjaOne retains data that you've selected for deletion for 72 hours before permanently removing it. If you believe you selected the wrong data for deletion, contact NinjaOne support immediately.
  • Deleting or changing a device's policy does not delete data. It prevents the backup plan configured for that policy from running, but previously backed-up data still must be deleted.
  • Disabling NinjaOne Backup does not delete data. If you are disabling the NinjaOne Backup application, we recommend removing all data before doing so.
  • When you delete data for an active plan, the next time the plan runs, it will result in the agent sending data for the plan as if it were running for the first time, creating a new full backup.
  • Whenever a device or organization with backup data is deleted or rejected, NinjaOne will prompt you to choose whether to keep or permanently delete all associated backup data.
  • When you delete backup data, you can delete specific volumes or all volumes, but you must delete all data on a selected volume.
  • If you have backup data stored locally and in the cloud, and the device is still online, you'll have the option to delete local, cloud, or both.

Delete Backup Data at the Device Level

When you delete data from a backup plan at the device level, NinjaOne deletes the backups; however, the plan remains active and will create a new full backup unless you disable it.

To delete backup data from the device level, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the device dashboard in NinjaOne, move your cursor over the Backup tab, and then select Manage.
The backup plans you set up at the policy level display on the page.
  2. Select the checkbox next to the Image plan that contains the data you want to remove.
  3. Select Delete data at the top of the plan listings. Alternatively, you can place your cursor over the Action menu (three dots) at the far right of the plan listing and select Delete data.

Delete Backup Data for a Selected Volume

NinjaOne Image Backup plans allow you to delete by individual volume. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the device dashboard in NinjaOne, move your cursor over the Backup tab, and then select Manage. The backup plans you set up at the policy level will display on the page.
  2. Click the plan name that contains the volume backup data you want to delete.
  3. Select the checkbox( next to the volumes you wish to delete. While you can delete an individual volume's data, you cannot select individual files or folders for deletion.
  4. Select the Delete data button at the top of the plan listings. Alternatively, you can place your cursor over the Action menu (three dots) at the far right of the plan listing and select Delete data.

You can only delete local backup data when NinjaOne Backup is installed, active, and the machine is online. Otherwise, note the storage location displayed in the deletion modal and manually remove the backup data from the device. See NinjaOne Backup: Manually Deleting Local Backup Data for more information on manually deleting data.

Disable Image Backup Plans at the Policy Level

When you disable a plan from the policy level, the backup agent will no longer be able to run jobs for that plan on schedule or manually.

NinjaOne does not delete the backup data when an Image plan is disabled at the policy level. You must delete the data for each device as described in the Delete Backup Data at the Device Level section above.

To disable an Image backup policy, follow these steps:

  1. From the NinjaOne navigation menu on the left of the dashboard, navigate to Administration → Policies and locate the policy for the device whose Image plan you wish to disable.
  2. Select Backups, then Image, from the left navigation menu.
  3. Click Disable
Dashboards: NinjaOne Backup.
